When clients ask ChatGPT a legal question, your firm appears below the answer
In August 2026 OpenAI updated its ad policy: US law firms licensed where the ad runs can now advertise legal services in ChatGPT. Ads appear below the answer, clearly labeled, and never change what ChatGPT says. We extend our Google Ads playbook into AI chat.
6 things we do for AI chat ads
Account setup and approval
OpenAI reviews legal advertisers manually and requires a license in each state you target. We prepare and submit everything and follow up; the account stays in your name.
Ads written for the conversation
ChatGPT picks ads from the current conversation. We write titles, copy and context hints per case type — car accidents, workers’ comp, immigration, family law — so ads match the right conversations.
Matching landing pages
OpenAI reviews the ad and the landing page together. Each ad goes to the matching practice-area page with credentials, results and a consultation button.
Copilot and Google AI Mode
Microsoft Copilot ads run through Microsoft Advertising, and eligible Google Search campaigns can appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. We set these up together so one keyword and copy plan covers them all.
Conversion tracking
Clicks, calls and forms from ChatGPT are tracked separately and compared with Google Ads in one monthly report, by cost per inquiry.
Two rulebooks
Every ad follows both OpenAI’s ad policy and your state bar’s rules: no promised outcomes, no political or contested topics such as immigration enforcement — only the services you offer.
ChatGPT ad rules (from OpenAI)
- Open only to US firms licensed in the state where the ad runs; legal ads outside the US are not yet allowed
- The legal category is rolling out gradually, with manual case-by-case review — approval isn’t guaranteed
- Ads show only to Free and Go users (Plus, Pro and other paid plans have no ads) and never to users under 18
- Ads appear below the answer, clearly labeled, never change the answer, and don’t appear next to sensitive topics like mental health or politics
- OpenAI doesn’t share conversations with advertisers; we see aggregated data such as views and clicks
ChatGPT ads are very new, and approvals and results are still changing. We don’t promise approval or case volume — start with a small test budget and compare cost per inquiry with Google Ads. Rules based on OpenAI’s ad policy (September 2026).
